Glass nozzles for extruders

Glass nozzles for extruders

I am making four basic types of glass nozzles that will replace both the PTFE and brass threaded rod of current extruder hot end designs (see images below). They are easy to add nichrome heater wire and thermocouples to with Kapton Tape (wiki), as well as mount with either a 'saddle clamp' on the flanged nozzles, and a compression fitting on the ones without a lip or flange.

roughly 3" or 75mm long, 8mm OD, 3.5mm ID, borosilicate glass with torch based annealing, with orifice diameters between 0.4mm and 0.55mm at these basic prices:

1) Blunt nosed without a lip for compression fitting mounting $5
2) Blunt nosed with a lip (like a test tube with a hole in the bottom) for clamp mounting $7
3) Drawn to a fine point without a lip $5
4) Drawn to a fine point with a lip $7

If you wish a smaller orifice size, add $2 for sizes down to 0.25mm, and $5 for smaller than 0.25mm (I think I can get down to 0.1mm)

Shipping and handling is $5 for any number of nozzles in the US, and $10 for anywhere outside the US that I can figure out how to ship to.

Let me know if you have any specific requests you would like me to add.

Item: tapered glass extruder nozzle

Item description: this replaces both the brass threaded rod and the PTFE/PEET insulator block with one simpler, smaller, hopefully more reliable part.

(part #, technical specification, etc.) The glass is borosilicate, which means it is good to over 1000C, is very strong, and has a low coefficient of thermal expansion. The outside diameter is 8mm, the inside diameter is approximately 3.4mm. The orifice size varies due to the hand made nature or the glass blowing process, but tries to 0.5mm or smaller. Typical length is around 80mm. The glass has been annealed to reduce thermal stress.

Item Condition: New

Number Available: currently 5, hopefully more soon.

Item: blunt nosed, no flange, glass extruder nozzle

Item description: this replaces both the brass threaded rod and the PTFE/PEET insulator block with one simpler, smaller, hopefully more reliable part. Unlike the tappered glass nozzles, these are blunt nosed and much stronger

Item: blunt nosed, flangeed, with index "key", glass extruder nozzle

Item description: this replaces both the brass threaded rod and the PTFE/PEET insulator block with one simpler, smaller, hopefully more reliable part. Unlike the tappered glass nozzles, these are blunt nosed and much stronger

These have been treated at the other end to produce a lip or flange that will prevent the glass from slipping out of a clamp so that the clamp does not need to squeeze them down as hard. It also adds a short piece of glass parallel to the tube that will fit into a keyway cut into the clamp. This will prevent any rotation of the glass nozzle and eliminate errors caused by a slightly out-of-round nozzle tip moving and causing relative accuracy errors
