Which tool to model from photographs

Which tool to model from photographs

I have plastic piece from Volvo handbrake. I would like to do replacement part with 3D printer.

The problem is insane curves of the piece. I've tried couple of times to take photos and feed them to visualSFM and haven't got usable mesh. The cat which wanted to be photographed too made quite nice mesh.

As I have some photos, and I can generate them more for my need I'm wondering. Is there any tool which I can take the photos, select same points in multiple angles and it would produce good model? Automation failed this time.

Preferably Linux or OS X free (in beer) software

I found VisualSFM sometimes needed a bit of tweaking to get it right.

Also, I'm guessing the part you're trying to copy is black plastic? That might be difficult to get good photos of. Perhaps try painting it white? Or painting some coloured stripes on it so that VisualSFM has something to recognise.

Like every good photographer, I too put my model through makeup. I gave potato starch coating for it. So it had black and white spots but the resulting point cloud was terribly sparse.

That way I have been able to make tight fit cases for wall warts and black shiny batteries. So it has to be the rounding to every direction.

123D Catch seems to be free. Perhaps you have an Android phone. I have tried PC version and I did not get very good scan from the human head. But it was older version.

Autodesk has something similar to 123D Catch called Memento that might be able to do the job.

I tried 123D and didn't like. The mesh I got out wasn't that usable.

Now I'm playing with regard3d, which seems to be quite capable and has a lot of potential. Easiest platform to use it is OS X.

Hi I made few tests with the suggested open source software Regard3d (For Windows & Linux too):

Quite easy. No messing with clouds and uploads.
