After seeing RoundSparrow's post here [forums.reprap.org] I tried something similar using a 3/8" washer. Bigger than a penny but it already had a hole in it. Acted like a heatsink, though. I also tried using a bent paperclip. That seems to work nicely.

How do you fasten it on. Do you use a nut?

I just slip it over the heater barrel and tighten the nozzle over that. The heater's wrapped in PTFE tape, so the ring's wedged between the two.
