printing threaded things like screws, screwcaps etc

Here and there I see people printing screws, screw caps and other threaded items:

How is this done? I tried printing a replacement screw for a Fisher Price activity center but the thread is a complete mess. Which is btw very logical since it is in fact a very low angled overhang...
Is this done with support material?

I did it by making a custom thread with only 45 degree overhangs and a pitch that was big enough to have at lease two layers per thread. Details here [hydraraptor.blogspot.com]

It would be a lot more difficult to make a thread the mated with an existing one.

Nophead, Thanks for the tips and the link to your blogpost. Ill try with an angled profile instead of a rounded square one that I used.
