Direct drive extruder
October 29, 2012 05:49AM
Hi,

I have a nice GRRF hot-end for 3mm filament, with a 0.3mm nozzle, which I'm currently using with a geared extruder (Wade).

I'm wondering if it is possible to drive such hot-end configuration with a direct drive extruder (= a Nema17 motor without any reducer)?

Or do I have to switch to a 1.7mm filament hot-end?

Thanks,

Frédéric

A direct-drive extruder with a NEMA 17 motor will struggle with 3 mm filament, but will work just fine with 1.75 mm filament.

For 3mm filament, you'd do better with a gearbox motor such as [www.phidgets.com] (Nema 17 stepper) or [www.2engineers.com] (tin-can stepper)

Hi!
So, how can this extruder works with a nema 17 and 3mm filament?
Thanks

Interesting! Couldn't find a spec but going from pics it looks like a high torque NEMA 17. Love to know what the performance is like.

€163 is a little too pricey for me to experiment with...

You are right! And this is why I was asking some informations here...

It seems that 3mm direct drive can work, but may be near the torque limit of a Nema17. Torque can be increased at the expense of heavier and more expensive motor of course, which is a similar tradeoff to using a geared motor.

Quick search came up with this [www.thingiverse.com] amongst others.

I have two of the QU-BD extruder kits, which I haven't built yet, but I would like to adapt one to 3mm. I have an idea to use a bowden-direct hybrid drive. A Bowden drive feeds into a direct drive extruder. This reduces the moving mass, but also has fine control at the extruder head.
