Notes for Father Christmas re 3D Printer Filament

I've been doing some research on what printer filament is now avaliable directly in NZ as Christmas is comming up. There's a lot more interesting filaments avaliable now than there were 8 months ago. Heaps more suppliers too.

I've written up my notes if anyone else is interested.

Please leave a comment here or on my blog if you know of any other interesting or unusual filaments avaliable in NZ.

PS.

Thanks for the nice comments on the 3D Printing Lecture series in Lower Hutt [forums.reprap.org] . I was also gobsmacked at the turn out.

On the blog there's also notes on creating a model from photos using Autodesk's 123D Catch as I described in that talk.

You must factor in the cost of shipping if you haven't already done so - it is part of the price whether we like it or not...

"You must factor in the cost of shipping"
So true, sadly.I can get 0.5kg rolls from hong kong for $8.50us,but the shipping kills it stone dead.Around $37us,IIRC.
Chch supplier has pla for $38.90,abs slightly more. Not a bad price,i thought.

Hello,

Well, as I found out china has cheap low-quality filament with cheap and slow shipping. Buy china for budget i say.

Thanks,
Jeremy

@beeep22

and be prepared to replace your hotend every month or so due to clogs that cant be removed.

Sure they aren’t all like that, but 90% are,

I deliberatly only looked at "interesting" filaments avaliable in NZ in my blog post. I'm always keen to try something new. In the list on my blog post the same specialist filament is not avaliable from more than one supplier. This makes it a bit pointless to compare costs so I didn't go to the extra trouble of finding shipping costs.

I found that last time I looked (8 months ago) there was little avaliable in NZ other than plain PLA or ABS and shipping for the more unusual stuff from overseas (usually the States) was really expensive.

Then my birthday present included some FilaFlex, and some polycarbonate. Now for Christmas the choice looks much better...

The question of where to get the cheapest (including shipping) plain PLA or ABS is quite different. The last PLA filament we bought locally was $49/kg including shipping. I haven't found much better on aliexpress my usual source for shopping in China. Feel free to post any sources you've tried along with a review of the filament's printing quality.
