New Member wanting to Build any help would be awesome!
June 18, 2013 05:27PM
Hi All,

I'm new to this user group. I joined as I would like to build a Reprap 3D printer but don't know how. I saw some articles online but abit nervouse in regards to the software side of things.

I live in Auckland and hoping I can get some assistance, mentoring or any material whatsoever to get started e.g. were to begin?, where to buy? - trade me?

Is it worth it? <--- is it better to by a complete set?

Thanks!
Kev

Howdy Kev,
There are some good kits around and for your first printer I would recommend one of them as they come with everything you need and usually have good instructions. I bought my first kit from Makerfarm and have since built half a dozen more of varying designs. The beauty of this plan is you get up and running fast then can build whatever you want including another printer.
Price-wise there isn't much to be saved by buying all the bits yourself although if you are careful and know what you are buying you can make some good savings on the parts cost but it is very easy to buy the wrong bits or get fooled on price over quality issues.
Have a search for a Mendel Prusa kit or an I3, both are very good places to start.
Cheers, Simon.

Hi Kev,
I too am very new to the reprap scene and have just started gathering all the bits for an i3.
I'm in Sth Auckland - rural Pukekohe area so if you happen to go the route of an i3 and / or are anywhere in the area, I'll do whatever I can to assist.

In my case, I wanted to source as much as possible of the parts myself rather than grabbing a kitset. (Purely for added fun... Or perhaps that should read frustration? LOL).

At present, I've purchased the plastics, bearings, threaded rods / hardware, aluminium plates and heatbed.
Next month I'm hoping to grab the remaining bits (motors, smoothrods, electronics, hotend), much of which will be coming from overseas.

Anyway, best of luck with whichever machine(s) you choose to build.
