Hi guys
I've been looking for an alternative to bulldog clips and I think I found them. 40x6mm spring steel clips.
they work great and are low to the bed.

Amazon has something similar called "tablecloth clips". They are not as perfect as these are, but they are cheaper.

Picture frame clips (also called Swiss clips) work well too.
