At the top there is a rectangle cut out and next to it a large hole and a slightly smaller one below it. DO the motor mounts attach to the surface when the two holes are on the left or flipped to the right?

What direction it faces is not explained in the assembly instructions, but I found a photo of a finished printer and it looks like the holes go to the right of the rectangular cutout.

Answered my own question. Hurrah for me!

Correct, the two holes you mention are for the displays rotery encoder(middle) and buzzer.(top) and the small hole below them is the displays reset button hole.
