Prusa i3 shifting, im going crazy! [SOLVED]
August 29, 2015 06:24PM
Ive been at problem this literally every awake hour for several days now and im about to loose my mind!

Randomly throughout my prints, the X axis shifts to the right (standing in front of the printer) most often by about 10mm.
Also i noticed that sometimes when homing it, the X axis does not go fully home, wich i think has something to do with it but i dont know how or why.

Ive tried adjusting the pot according to the calcutator, also tried adjusting by feel but no success.
The belt is tight and has no way of slipping, the motor or driver does not get hot. Ive tried placing a fan against the drivers, ive tried switching the drivers between X and Y.
Ive tried several different models and slicing softwares, aswell as printing via pronterface, repetier-host and via the LCD-screen.
Ive calibrated the XYZ in the config file, ive turned down/off acceleration, ive run it super slow, ive tried everything i can think of.

Take note though that a couple days ago i had never seen a 3d printer in real life or even heard of arduino so i have had to learn alot in a very short time and im by no means "good" at this.

Heres the printer im using if thats of any use: [www.reprap.cn]

Ive caught both the shifting and homing problems on video:
Shifting 1, happens at 1:00 [www.youtube.com]
Shifting 2, happens at 0:10 [www.youtube.com]
Not homing, happens at 0:32 [www.youtube.com]

I also have a picture of all my prints so far, everyone has the same problem but at different layers and a different amount of times. As you can see i have gotten 1 successful print out of like 15, that one was completely random, instantly after i got that one i tried printing the same file again without changing anything but it shifted like everyone else.
[oi59.tinypic.com]
Yes i know some of them have crappy extrusion but thats another problem thats not as recurrent, right now im trying to fix the X axis.

Heres my current config file:

Update: today i tried switching the X and Y motors on the board and the shifting was still in the same direction wich suggests the fault is somewere between the Ramps and the drive belt and not a software issue?
For some motors i had to solder on longer wires to reach the board, the X motor has the longest ones and i was out of that kind of wire so i used another that was just slightly thicker, could this cause any kind of wierdness due to voltage changing between the thicker and thinner wire? Im not an electritian or anything its just an idea i got since thats the only thing that differs this one from the rest, basically it has a stump of the original wire coming from the motor going over to the slightly thicker wire, then near the board it goes back down to the original wire and connector.

Is there a binding issue? with the printer unpluged and not hooked to usb if you slowly push the bed and x-carriage back and forth see if there is any tight spots.
Is the print still stuck firmly to the bed is it coming loose? Are any wires hanging down bumping it? How tight are the belts and is the motor hot after being in use a few minutes (I saw you said these were good but I added adjuster because what I thought was a tight belt was not!!)

Hello, please watch your first video again at the point where it moves off!!
Take note of the pully wheel and set screw on the flats.
This appears to shift and is NOT in line with flat.
Is the set screw tight??

ALWAYS check the basics first, mechanics can loose, software does change on it's own.

I just checked the set screws (there are 2, one against the flat and one 90 degrees next to it), I used a slightly larger screwdriver for more torque and was able to tighten then a little bit further. However it still shifted 10mm when trying to print after that.
The motors are not getting even slightly hot (haven't run any long prints though), the X carriage runs freely.
I remember that when I first assembled the printer I put the end stop on the wrong side so when homing it ran into the frame and started slipping until I shut the power off, could this have damaged the motor? I do not seem to be able to move the carriage with the motor engaged (haven't tried super hard though but feels like it's holding on good)
I cannot get the belt to slip manually by jerking the carriage while holding the pulley etc and I have not seen it jump in action so I'm gonna guess it's tight enough? There are no wires bumping the carriage, the carriage wires slightly touch the frame when at home but that's it. The prints stick very well to the bed.

you must switch OFF the motors to move manually.
May I suggest stop printing and check the calibration of your axes.

Yes ofcourse, what i meant was that the motor doesnt slip when trying to move the carriage by hand, as kind of a test to see its holding properly.
I have already calibrated it and when told to move 100mm it moves exactly 100mm (extruder is not calibrated but thats not the issue now)

Ive been feeling around on the X and Y axis and i think that the bearings feel really jaggy, how do yours feel? They slide really easy with just putting your finger and pushing the carriages around. When putting some pressure on them they still slide easy but you can feel the jagginess (dont know a better word to describe it) in the bearings and they also does not sound like good bearings, especially the Y axis is feeling extremely jaggy. And yes they are lubed with grease.
If theres one thing ive learnt as a mechanic its how bad/worn bearings sound and feel, in my book these both feel and sound like a prime example of really bad bearings even though their brand new.
I will probably go to my local SKF store and buy some quality bearings.

Just wanted to update in case someone in the future has the same problem.
I dont want to say too much yet but i seem to have solved the problem, so far ran 3 prints in a row without any issue.
I took the X axis apart and greased up the bearings even more than before, also made sure the motor was perfectly aligned when remounting it. After that it has had 0 problems.
Note that i did not feel any noticable drag on the axis exept for the slight jaggyness in the bearings (wich is still there just a little better with the grease), so even if you feel like its running smoothly it might not, same as the other guy who thought his belt felt tight when it really wasnt.

Re: Prusa i3 shifting, im going crazy! [SOLVED]

This is a typical issue from an end stop switch that is being triggered randomly. When triggered, the extruder thinks it's at the left X home, so it starts all subsequent movement to the right only.

Check the switch. And its wiring to make sure it's not near a wire which pulses a lot.
