New build issue, Folgertech Prusa i3 2020
July 24, 2015 05:59PM
Just finished assembly of my Folger Tech Prusa i3 2020 and I'm not having any luck getting the motors to move. Wiring has been check and rechecked multiple times, and is fine. There are a few signs that something is wrong, but I'm new to this and don't know where to start troubleshooting.

1. I lose my USB connection to the Arduino if I connect more than 3 of the stepper drivers to the RAMPS

2. With X, Y, and Z stepper drivers installed, I can heat the bed and extruder, but the motors do not move when commanded

3. I flashed the RAMPS Test Code .pde file from reprap.org and the LEDs flash on my RAMPS, but nothing moves.

4. My Arduino board gets almost too hot to touch under the black power plug (not used) when connected/running

What steps should I take next to get this working? My best guess is that my RAMPS or stepper drivers are bad, but again I;m new to this. Thanks for any advice!

EDIT: When commanding movement manually in Repetier, I get the following on every axis (Y shown as an example, but they all do the same thing):

20:49:02.406 : echo:endstops hit: Y:0.01
20:51:02.078 : echo:endstops hit: Y:0.03
20:51:02.683 : echo:endstops hit: Y:0.04
20:51:03.204 : echo:endstops hit: Y:0.05
20:51:03.679 : echo:endstops hit: Y:0.06
20:51:04.101 : echo:endstops hit: Y:0.08
20:51:04.511 : echo:endstops hit: Y:0.09

Looks like its not homed. Check out this thread: [forums.reprap.org]

Read through it because I think we've all had the issue with endstops being reversed and whatnot. There are a number of solutions posted in there.

I'll give that a read, but that doesn't sound like it would solve the issue of losing USB connection with 4 or 5 of the stepper drivers installed. My PC can detect it with 2, 2, or 3. If I add the 4th it connects and immediately disconnects

Could be bad stepper controllers. I had one bad one out of the box. If it was plugged into any spot on the ramps the USB would not connect.
