Can't Upload to Arduino board - Timeout
March 25, 2015 11:12AM
Hello.

First time poster
I have bought and built a Prusa I3 from ebay
[www.ebay.com]
I tried following the instructions i found online to upload the correct firmware, but as it turns out, i can't.
I keep trying to upload the Marlin software but the arduino throws the timeout error at me every time..

avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_getsync(): timeout communicating with programmer

So I can't make any progress here.. please help.

Hi im not a Prusa i3 expert by any means but here's something to try
I assume your running windows

Open device manager in windows and under com ports see which port the controller is on ( un plug it and wait a few seconds then plug it back in to confirm)
remember the port number and make sure you are using that in Arduino

Make sure theres no other software open and using the port

Try downloading and installing an older version of arduino There have been some reports of the later versions giving trouble
i use 1.0.,5r2 all the time without issues
you can grab it here
[code.google.com]

In future its best to post more info about your machine ...what control board you have ..what OS you have on your computer...what software you want to use to control etc

Cheers

Ok, i figured out what was wrong.
I have a display on my prusa and apparently it was pulling too much current, blocking the serial communication.
I disconnected the display and it worked fine.
My printer is now a few callibrations away from printing grinning smiley
