Extruder motor gets hot....
October 12, 2015 03:59AM
Hello,

I am using a metal extruder with direct drive.

The extruder stepper motor gets hot while heating the hotend.

Did anyone noticed similar.

Setup similar to below link image.

Check the Vref of the stepper driver.
It might not match the motors max. phase current.
I have the same extruder design on my Prusa and it gets slightly warmer than the other steppers.

Hi,
It's not because of stepper driver of extruder motor. It is because of the metal contact of hotend with motor while running PID autotune. Did anyone came across such situations?

Does the heater block touch the heatsink/steppermount? There should be a gap of 2-3mm. ( if the hotend isn't insulated...)

Just what I thought,
remove everything between heatsink and hotend. There must be no other metallic contact than by the heatbarrier.
If you have to fix the hotend to keep it from turning, you can use short cutoffs from PTFE tube and push at least two of them in the gap.

OK,
Will try today...

Hi,

I tried maintaining 2 - 3 mm gap between the heater block and metal extruder, but the the heating time is very much increased during PID autotune.

As the hotend barrel is directly connected to the base of metal extruder.... Anyone noticed..?
