printing larger pieces
October 08, 2013 01:40PM
I'm planning on buying a kit to build a rerap and have been reading info about it and I'm wondering about the limitation of the size something can be printed. It seems like 8" is the max. Whats the reason the kit couldn't be increased in Y direction to be able to print much larger objects? It seems if you could just print much larger in one direction you could greatly increase what you could print. Thanks!

Typically large prints are not done because of warping and cracking as well as other associated issues. A lot of people will take one large item and break it into smaller pieces that are designed to be put together after printing. I am currently in the design phase of a large format core xy build and there are a lot of challenges in getting it to print correctly. I have several printers I've built like the Simple XL which has approximately 9x12x12 inch print platform and I've gotten some good large print results using alternating rafts and other breakaway supports.
