Pronterface & Sli3er - how much input do each supply?

Hiya all.

I'm pretty noob at 3D printing, as this is my first printer.
Its a Prusa 'classic' from 3D-Stuffmaker. Not the best choice...

So its a Prusa of unknown variant now, due to multiple mods by me
to overcome multiple manufacturing and mis-supplied parts issues.
It is running a Gen6 board with marlin/sprinter firmware.

But my problem is software related. This setup uses Pronterface
with an unknown version (I cant find it), and uses Sli3er 0.9.10.56
now that I have upgraded its version.

Currently, I'm printing OK but rather inconsistantly. I blame this on
poor experience, poor calibration, and jumping back and forth between PLA colors.

BUT, my reason for this post is to improve my understanding of how much
Pronterface settings affect a print. I have read in various places around the web
that is has NO affect on the actual print, and other places say it does...

So, that is my question... does the settings in Pronterface affect the print at all?
Specifically to do with speed.

Because ... as I have said, I am printing "OK" at the moment, just very slow.
But if I adjust the sli3er setting to faster speeds, the job still takes the same
amount of time to complete as the slower settings. I've even tried sending it the
"G220 S200" code and the printer is definately 'moving' noticeably faster, but the
job still takes the same amount of time to complete...
(PS. The P103-Rook chess piece from the pronterface demo-files)

So ... any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance.
