would it be posible to get a kit to make ormerod like Eriks(if he wants to put his designs out here) and make it for Ormerod 2 aswell?

Difficult to say without knowing exactly what is involved.

At a guess i would say it would not be cost-effective - it's great when you do these things for your own machine but putting a kit together would have to include labour and other costs etc which then makes it too expensive.

I can honestly say that (most likely) no builders will have a laser cutter capable of cutting metal in their shed smiling smiley

It's a horrifically expensive machine, both to purchase and run.

I use a CNC plasma cutter, it's cheaper to buy but not as useful as the cut detail level is lower, it is however far cheaper to run smiling smiley

Water jet is similar in cost to laser but has the highest cut quality.

Yes I can make that part easily if wanted.

The dimensions in Ormerod168's post are most helpful,

What would the thickness be, 3mm??

If wanted I can work out a price but it won't be much, less than £10 anyway.

Dave

Dave, I just ordered arms and a print bed on your site. If you can make this part, I will definitely add one to my order!

I picked up an unassembled new in box kit recently, so I've been looking at all the mods and have most ready to go. I too ordered an arm and bed. Let us know when they ship. Very keen to get it running, fantastic minds on this forum.

Hello, I have finally found the time to fit the aluminium X arm upgrade to my Ormerod 2. I must say it has made a real difference to the performance, my prints are much cleaner and more accurate in the X Y axis now. If you buy one it is worth spending a bit of time finishing off with a file to get nice clean square edges, I also gave mine a nice shiny finish by buffing with a power polisher.

I have been advised that the Mk2 runner runs on the underside of the arm instead of the back face??

In that case i will clean all future kits on that face using a surface plate to get a decent surface there.

I currently have plenty of stock

That is right but only the newer revisions since 528.5 and up. But I more like the older version so I would always use this.

Does that mean that the X-Plates and ribs that I bought for my Ormerod 2 are of little use?

Don't worry, running the bearing on the lower edge is a fix to a problem (side flexing acrylic part) that do not exist with Dave's aluminium plate - the original style, all things being equal, will be more precise because of the shorter longer distance between the centerline of the smooth rod and the contact point of the bearing running along the X-plate

Yes but the kit that I have is to the latest design so will use the bottom edge will it not?

You simply can print a x-carriage according to your needs.

Or gently smooth the lower edge, it only takes a short while, its pretty good as it comes.

If it's "Pretty Good as it Comes" then why are you modifying the stock that you have for the latest Ormerod 2?

DaveK is known for the high quality of the parts he sells, and I guess "Pretty good as it comes" is not the same as "Perfect".

When using the acrylic X arm, I can see the advantage of running the bearing on the underside of the arm, because the acrylic arm tends to wave a little under the weight of the head. But when using DaveK's aluminium X arm, I think it is probably better to run the bearing on the back of the X plate as with the previous design, because it is at a greater distance from the centre of rotation of the head. So you might prefer to print the previous design for the X carriage, instead of smoothing the bottom edge of the plate.
