Replicating Ormerod

I have been looking at my kit wondering about replication.

The Extrusuion is readily available on ebay.

Thr 12mm silver steel ground rods are available but mostly in 333mm length just 17mm too short.

I assume the motors are reasonably common. Does anyone have the exact specification? Nema 17 seems to be a frame size.

The electronics board cost about 120 pounds which some think is high.

The power supply is available remarkably cheaply about 12 pounds.

Perhaps some of the current supplies of motor and electronics kits can be adapted.

It would be nice if others who are interested could post their observations here as well as name sources for parts.

Markbee

Tis vendor will cut the lenghts for you. There are plenty more just type in 20x40mm aluminium extrusion. It will be necessary to tap the ends but this is easy.

Is cheaper but only in 1m lengths.

Hi Matt

Thought this thread had died.

Good work the Duet is from think3d and is 120 pounds. I was sent an ACE psu which is similar but can be cheaper at 10.50 plus VAT.

Edit

I am certain stainless steel rod is unsuitable, Ian I think has said they use Ck55 steel but I will check.

@Rory166

maybe this Carbon Steel rod is more suitable, even mentions the same linear bearings

That must be the stuff ck55. precision induction hardened ground rod.

The threaded rod is stainless I assume but have not tried the magnet test.

Rory

In my ignorance I have ordered another type of hardened ground rod, at this stage I cannot say for sure which is best.

CHEMICAL ANALYSIS % C-1.15 Si-0.25 Mn-0.30 Cr-0.65 V=0.10
SUPPLIED CONDITION Annealed 180-240 BHN GROUND AND POLISHED AVAILABLE 1-2-3 METER LENGTHS
TOLERANCE
METRIC h8 (minus tolerance)
10mm-18mm +0 -0.027
HEAT TREATMENT (FOR GUIDENCE ONLY)
Heat slowly to 780-800 deg c quench in water to achieve 64rc, temper at 150 deg c for 62rc, 300 deg c for 58rc.

As you can see this is higher carbon and si,Mn and Cr. Time will tell if I have made a boob or stuck lucky. It mentions polished which I suspect the ck55 may not be, ck55 does feel quite rough when the bearings are moved.

Any expert commentary greatly appreciated.
