Error:Line Number is not Last Line Number+1, Last Line
May 11, 2013 03:16PM
Hello,
I keep getting the following error at the start of my prints. I have tried slicing with slic3r and with skeinforge but both show similar issues. I have noticed that my temperatures from the hot end seem a bit more erratic than normal. I get random spikes in the temperature, say up to 10 deg jumps either up or down before returning to normal on the next check.... Any ideas?

Have you got "Monitor Printer" ticked while printing? I find that corrupts the comms.

No I'm not ticking that.
I tried it again, just extruding in printer interface and I get this :

also, at first, the extruder motor makes a shudder, were it goes back and forth very quickly when i press ’extrude’. Then i get the above message. do i have a short somewhere? i have checked it all and i can't find it. i even replaced the serial connector that plugs into the extruder block.

Perhaps the ground connection to the Melzi is not tight enough.

Looks like you are using a newer version of Pronterface that I am not familiar with. Line number problems look more like host bugs or something out of sync because it is sending M105 commands without line numbers and the firmware is expecting a line number. Also it says shut down due to errors, but it doesn't always show what the error is. Normally that is on the line before. Maybe that version of Pronterface isn't compatible with the firmware. The version I use doesn't send M105 unless the monitor option is ticked or I press check temp.

The extruder motor will vibrate if one coil is disconnected.

The thermistor will read very low if it is disconnected triggering MINTEMP.

Both of those could be caused by dry joints on the extruder PCB or the IDC connector not closed properly.

I can't see how it would read a little low or high without it actually being that temperature but I don't know how far apart the readings are. Obviously it can't jump that much in a short time.

I don't understand why the temperature seems to hover around 250C when the target is 240C. Have you changed the PID settings? Those can make it unstable. Also if the temperature is really dropping it could make the extruder motor skip steps.

If the ground is not good it tends to give comms errors and USB disconnects when you turn on motors and heaters. I don't think you have that but it might affect the temperature readings.

i am using the version on the sd card.
i set it to 240 and it frequently sends m105s. I'll check again when i get home.

The one on the SD card is for Windows and you appear to be using Linux.

The version I use does have the "Changing monitoring state ..." comments.

Ahh I see. Sorry N0phead, I have confused things a bit. The first post I made was using my raspberry pi with Octoprint. I have since plugged in my laptop directly using the Prontface provided on the SD card to try to diagnose. However, I get similar issues on both.

I'll set it up now using Windows Prontface and post step by step what happens..

I just turned the printer on, and I connected to it using the Windows version of Printer Interface
I set the hot end to 240 and left it alone.
I can tell it was heating up because I could start to smell the ABS but then I got this :

ok T:16.6 /0.0 B:15.9 /0.0 @:0%
Printer is now online.
Setting hotend temperature to 240.000000 degrees Celsius.
Error:0
: Extruder switched off. MINTEMP triggered !

Can you do the same think with Monitor ticked so I can see the progression of the temperature please.

I ticked monitor but it didn't seem to make much difference other than adding a line chart showing the hotend heating up.

It got to a steady 240 and I left it a little while but it seemed ok. As soon as I clicked on Extrude 5mm:

Connecting...
ok T:13.0 /0.0 B:16.2 /0.0 @:0%
Printer is now online.
Setting hotend temperature to 240.000000 degrees Celsius.

Seems like a bad connection somewhere on the extruder then. Try moving the wires around while monitoring the temperature.

I did that and the temp disappears then reappears on the console. I can't see any bad soldering but I definitely have a dodgy connection. Many Thanks nophead!
