Making my own 3D slicer/ Modifying one

I'm trying to build my own 3d slicer for my research and I've been trying to start simple. At the end i want to be able to generate g-code for a 5 axis 3d printer I'm making. But like i said trying to start simple and attempt a 3 axis slicer first. Overall i will be trying to figure out the entire process from importing a STL file to generating g-code but, right now I'm trying to find out how to generate g-code from a pre-determined path. I was hoping to take a look at the source code of slic3r to see how it is done in the software. So if someone could point me in a good direction that could help greatly thanks. Or if someone could point me in a good direction of how i should attempt this.
