bad horizontal suspended face
July 20, 2015 06:41PM
hi,
my Mendel printer works well, and I printed many pieces with good results.

Now I had to print a difficult object with a big suspended horizontal face.
I asked Slicer to generate supports, but the results is very bad.
The supports are very discontinuous, so the PLA filaments of first object layer of the suspended face, just over supports, fall-ed in the holes.

I suspect the supports should be generated with different settings.
Attached the settings I'm using now.
Can you please suggest me the best settings to print an horizontal suspended face?

Attached the object STL, and two shots of the printer printing, when it started the suspended face, and the first infill layer.

I use Slicer 1.2.9 with Pronterface 2015.03.10 where I imported the Mendel supplied nozzle 0.5 profiles

thank you

Do not expect the bottom surface of the supported part to look like the one on the bed. You would normally have to do some post-processing to get a reasonable appearance.
I would use the following settings:
- Z distance = 0
- Pattern spacing = 2 mm
The idea is to have an "as solid as possible" support, yet easy to cut away after printing. This way the surface will me more consistent.

thank you for the answer.

I do not know what is the parameter "Z distance = 0" ?
Do you mean "Contact Z distance" set to "0 (soluble)"?

OK to riduce the Pattern spacing to 2 mm

The other parameters I sent in attached "Slicer1.2.9supportsSettings.png"
in the Print Settings tab, Support material, are OK?
