Prusa i3/RAMPS help

I have a prusa i3 from folger tech with a ramps 1.4 board. I was adjusting the pots and there was a little smoke so i stopped everything and check incrementally. The arduino works fine, the RAMPS board has power and the nozzle extrudes and the z axis moves when connected and manually commanded. The X and Y axis would not move however so i figured I must have killed the stepper driver so i replaced the two off of an old board and something weird happened when i went to test it, if i move the X and Y axis nothing happens but when I home X and Y the Z axis moves. I'm ordering a new RAMPS board as i assume that must be the problem but didn't know if anyone had any insight. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Not likely to be the RAMPS at fault as it just takes the separate control signals from the arduino and sends them to the correct stepper via the pcb tracks.. IMO much more likely you have toasted the arduino when you fried the stepper boards......
