Congratulations! Glad you got it going. SmartRap core uses a cantilevered bed doesn't it? The twisting load on the LM8UUs for that sort of design is always likely to create more friction than a non-cantilevered layout.

It does use a cantilevered bed. The new z-axis system I was printing the parts for has support on opposite ends of the bed, so should be a big improvement.

I had exactly the same problem and tried all the same things you suggested without success, then I stumbled on a post suggesting driver overheating, which I originally dismissed, as I didnt think that the heatsink felt that hot, but as everything else had failed to solve the problem I fitted a 3inch fan blowing directly on to the face of the sanguinololu board and BINGO problem solved.
