I had that too at the beginning.
It can have many causes:
  • Bed wobbling caused by cheap bearings ( to much play )
  • cheap linear bearings rattling
  • To much friction ( binding) caused by cheap linear bearings ( to tight )

I suggest you buy better bearings or another set of the cheap ones and select the good from the bad.
A little rattling is acceptable, it will disappear over time. ( approx. 1kg of filament in my case)

Are you sure about your layer height setting ?

I had this also. Turned out my first layer height was too high.

How rigid is your frame? It might also be caused by your frame wobbling, so try reducing your acceleration settings.

What design of reprap is it? Different designs have different issues,

Large delta printer [miscsolutions.wordpress.com], E3D tool changer, Robotdigg SCARA printer, Crane Quad and Ormerod

Disclosure: I design Duet electronics and work on RepRapFirmware, [duet3d.com].

bought new bearings from adafruit. tightened everything up and changed layer height from .3 to .15mm. the bearings that came with it was like trying to roll gravel! Adafruits bearing rolled smooth. i believe the layer height did more good than anything. Thanks all!
