Yet Another Slic3r Vs. Cura Question

Yet Another Slic3r Vs. Cura Question
April 14, 2015 12:51PM
Hello Reprappers!!

I am fairly new to this amazing 3d printing world!
I have been trying to experiement alot with different slicers, and i have made it through Slic3r and Cura (Both Through Repetier host)

I have been getting different results.
The best results were obtained by using Slic3r, BUT! (and here comes the point of the topic) a print with slic3r takes roughly 3 times as long as with Cura, even though the speed settings are the same.
How can this be? - Is slic3r just that slow?

Cura's print paths are better setup.
I use Cura as my main slicer and Slic3r only when im feeling like messing around.
There is good and bad to both programs.

I see.
Do you use Repetier as well?

The results i'm seeing from Cura at the moment is no where near satisfactory confused smiley

i was using Slic3r when i first started printing, then one day it slowed down considerably. I deleted the settings and reset them to default and it was still super slow. So i tried out Cura and after several prints got it workin great , WITH THE SAME SPEED SETTINGS as slicer. I never went back to slicer,

Just putting someone elses settings into your Cura and hoping it to work is bad.
You must find out what settings you need for your printer.

Best thing to do get this [www.thingiverse.com] and play with your settings for each print. You scale it down so print time is faster.

I printed maybe 30 of these until i found the settings that worked for my printer. As floyd said, even just using SOME of someone else's settings may not work for your setup.

Here are my main settings for .2mm layer height. Don't pay attention to first layer height, those are specific to how my bed is leveled.

I use two different profiles, one for printing on glass and one for tape (adding .15 first layer height for tape thickness)

The last screen shot showing print\speed settings...are my usual settings as well. If it's a detailed part, i'll slow it down. If it's simple shapes, i'll speed it up. Same goes for infill %. totally depends on parts.
