Problem with print quality & grinding
April 10, 2015 05:22PM
Hi everyone!

I´ve got a problem with my RepRap Prusa i3 (i3 berlin), if I print ABS, everything works fine, but the layer placement is bad, if I print with PLA, its even worser and it grinds at the same layer height every print...
I have no idea what could cause this, before it worked perfectly with layer heights of as low as 0.025mm.

Anyone knows why?

It looks like you have bad inter layer adhesion problems. Probable printing either too cold for the filament or too fast for the temperature settings.

Also, do you have a fan to cool your extruder and a fan for the PLA part?

Hi,

thanks for the answer smiling smiley
I´m using an E3D v5 hotend, i´ve got cooling for the hotend and the PLA part, I have tried different temp settings with no better results...

Can you tell me what speed, temperature and layer height you used for that part?

The speed is normal, not very fast so around 40mm/s or so.
Im using 215°C for the PLA, the layer height is 0.2mm.

Those settings should be fine, so let's move to next question:

It's the hotend a real e3d or Chinese clone?
Does the stainless steel barrel have a PTFE liner or it's all metal? If it have a PTFE liner when was the last time you replace it?

Hi,

It´s an original one, I even replaced the whole thing, but it hasn´t changed anything...
I havent got an PTFE tube... (using 1,75mm filament)

When you extrude in the air, does the filament falls straight down or it curls up?

Your idler bearing might be too tight or feedrate or steps per mm might be off.

Other thing to look at is the extrusion width, what size is your nozzle and can you measure the filament after extruding some to see if comes out at the right thickness?

It falls straight, the nozzle should ne clean...
Before it worked perfectly, I haven't set anything with the steps per mm.
I've normally got a 0.4mm nozzle, I'll check the extrusion width later.

The diameter of the extruded filament is around 0.55mm...
