Cleaning of nozzles and plate

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum, and recently started working with 3d printers using Fused Filament Fabrication.
My printer is not a RepRap, but I have issues that are general enough to be discussed here, I think.
Cleaning is a required step for printing parts which are highly reproducible and of good quality.
My nozzles are made in brass and my plate is glass coated with PET.
Sometimes when I use new filament materials, I need to tune the process temperatures first (either ranges given by manufacturers are really large, or I plan to use my own extruded filament), so that the first extrusions lead to material depositing on the nozzles, or material sticking strongly to the plate.
In those two cases, I have difficulty performing a good cleaning with acetone.
While using an iron blade to remove residues on the brass nozzles might not do too much harm, it is another story on the PET coating, where acetone + heat (60-90°C) is also most of the time inefficient to dissolve printed residues.
What do you advise me to do in order to perform good cleaning, and thus repeatable printing?

Thank you a lot for your feedbacks.
Regards.
