Extrusion not consistent causing weave pattern [SOLVED]
January 08, 2015 07:11AM
Recently i built my first 3d printer, read about it here

I use a RAMPS 1.4 with DRV8825 drivers in 1/32 stepping mode for x,y,z and e.
The hotend is a E3D v6
ABS printed at 255 C on 100 C bed

The prints were pretty decent from the start, but they all have a wave type wall structure, like a basket..
It's the same in both PLA and ABS
See the two attached pics of my first ABS print.
The second photo shows a aborted print which shows how the first layer was put down.

I use a Mk8 extruder with 1/32th stepping on a DRV8825 driver
When extruding, the filament is pulled in with tiny little shocks/steps which could cause the inconsistant bead on the bed.
Should the extruder motor turn 100% smoothly? I don't know because this is my first 3d printer..
Would it help to try it on 1/16th stepping (or even try a A4988 driver?)
Note; I noticed a change in the structure when i adjust the flow while printing, also seen on pic1

Any suggestions are welcome!

I started experimenting and swapped the DRV8825 (1/32 stepping) driver for a A4988 (1/16 stepping)
Guess what?
The extruder motor turns as smooth as butter!
Not entirely sure what the problem was though, did not test the DRV8825 on 1/16th stepping or played with the current pot.
As far as i know, this DRV8825 is a new type driver which should be 100% compatible on the ramps board.

Printed a quick 1cm cube in PLA , see picture.

I know, not perfect yet (to startwith insufficient cooling for PLA, that's why i printed the white fan duct ;-))
but.. the pattern on the side is gone thumbs upcool smiley
Cube on the left printed with DRV8825, on the right with A4988
