Strange dirt
November 03, 2014 03:38PM
Hello!

since a few days my nozzles frequently are clogging with some strange dirt.
When I get it out, it reminds me to sand.

I have a dust cleaner just ahead to the extruder.
But this stuff comes through.
Any idea to prevent this?

Id get a new filament supplier fast!

This one is from Velleman with a 0.3mm nozzle. I had no problems with a 0.5mm nozzle.
I'm just running a printout, when it cloggs again, I'll take a GRR filament.
Maybe the Velleman filament will work with a 0.8mm nozzle.
Anny suggestions for a good filament?

Well it's either in the filament or part of your extruder is slowly disintegrating. Kind of looks like Bakelite dust, is there any bakelite as part of your extruder?

If it's in the filament then yes, get a new supplier. As for supplier suggestions, depends on what part of the world you are in.

The printout I mentioned in my last post looked this way:

just after about 10mm it got messy and then it printed on as usual.
Maybe the white stuff is too humid?

After this, I took a spool from GRR and it was fine.

Oh, yes: the hotend is PTFE and brass, so no Bakelite.

DARN it clogged again!

This time with some filament from GermanRepRap. So the source of the dirt must be else where.
Between the fingers the stuff feels like dust. Maybe the cleaner is not enough.

When I changed the nozzle, I manually extruded some filament without nozzle,
it looked this way.

I'm curious where this dirt comes from.

You mentioned you have a dust cleaner on your filament. What is in it? If it's foam or has oil in it, it may be turning into the dirt like substance you see. Take it off and try again.

True. If your foam cleaner is falling apart it might be ending up in the extruder.

Thanks for your advices. The cleaner is without oil.
I disassembled hotend and extruder and I'm just running another test print - now without cleaner..
I assumed it's maybe the foam, so I got me a silicon foam, such one you use for cleaning an solder iron tip.

But this printout will be without foam/cleaner.

Oh man, STOP using the filament!!!
You need a new filament supplier!!!

There is no way you are left with these dust.
The filament you are using is "contaminated" & is classified as very low quality filament.
These contaminants will damaged your printer.

Please tell us the supplier, so we all can avoid using that supplier's filament.

I don't like to make a hasty statement concerning the filament source.
Especially because the dirt occurs with filament from two different supplier.

I will do some more printouts to find out the real reason.

Edit: In fact, the dirt occurred since I used this dust cleaner.

For foam cleaners I use magic erasers, so far the dirtiest new filament has been the makerbot stuff I got in a pinch. The nice thing about the magic eraser is it does not seem to flake off like regular sponges.

So based on the cleaner you have a K8200, are you using any type of tubing up to the spool?

Good idea, but don't they wear out quite fast?

No, no tubing - fresh through the air

I only use about a inch by half inch strip with a hole poked in it and it lasted about 3 weeks before it was to dirty for my liking with my regular filament sitting in a bucket with desiccant, I imagine a whole eraser will last me a decent amount of time. Also I am out of ideas, there is not a very long filament path with that printer.

And you just put it above the extruder or do you use some special holder?
Re: Strange dirt

Yes, it is possible that the dust cleaner is creating those sand substances.

It is strongly suggested if you are not going to use the filament for some time, it is better to unload it and store in a dry, circulated area.
If you are using on a regularly basis, you don't even need to use a dust cleaner on the filament. If you really want to prevent dust, you should build a case instead.
It is better not to apply anything or contaminants to the filament itself. You're putting your printer at risk.

Hello botfeeder,

good suggestions. I already store my filaments in large (15 liters) buckets with lid.
I also put a bag of air dehumidifiers into the buckets. I have a humidity of about 35% in those buckets.

I do not have pets here, so the risk of fur hair is down to 0%

I just got an Idea: Instead of a complete case, I could make a cover for the spool (a round tupper pot with lid or a cake cover)
and a tube for the string that goes down to the extruder.

Great, keeping the filament as dry as possible is the best way to keep it fresh.
I usually keep my opened filament in my electronic dehumidifier and keep the filament in the range of 10-15%.

haha, I have a dog at home, so I have a slight fur problem. I build my printer a case. With the case I can even heat up my print bed to even higher temperature for better adhesive. love the case.

Yes, making a tube like spool case will work. Just make sure the cover would interfere with the feeding process. Enjoy smiling smiley

Hi botfeeder!

I'm happily printing without the cleaner since days now. No problem at all.

But the orange filament seems to be a bit too humid. I can hear the water bubbles
exploding while printing.

So this electronic dehumidifier makes me curious. What technique do you use?
Kind of a air condition and cooling down the air until the water condensates?
