Top layer wont print
September 10, 2014 06:19AM
As you can see on the pictures the prints are unfinished and i can see the infill. Can someone tell me what is wrong with my settings? I use Repetier-host and Slic3r 1.1.7.

Thanks for any suggestion

It looks like you have more issues than just missing the top layers...
Try another slicer like Cura and see what your results are.

I dont even use Slic3r anymore because of all the bugs and issues.

I've got the printer for 4 days. It needs some calibration. Ok i will try cura. Thanks

It looks really chunky. Maybe you can start by making sure the extrusion width and layer height is correct?

Why try to print anything without calibrating first?
Calibrate then try to worry about slicing errors.

I was not clear. I calibrated the x,y, and z axes and the extruder steps too, but I dont know where to find the extursion width in Cura. I found that these two parts should fit in each other. But the smaller one is way bigger then it should be. I have got this printer with 0.7 nozzle. Btw the top layer is fixed when I use Cura

Ive adjusted the flow rate in Cura to help with that. At 100% I was uverextruding even with my E steps correct. Now at 90% its much better.

Glad Cura corrected the problem on the layer. Its my go to slicer.

Ok i will try the flow rate. I will let you know. Thank you
//edit1: the flow rate made prints better but the major problem was the shell thickness. The walls are ok now.

edit2: i have another problem now. I cant level the bed. The z-axis is shifted or something because when i set my z to 0 and my nozzle is in correct position on every 4 corners the print is just mess. The nozzle is too high.

edit3: my latest prints. the dimensions are almost perfect the y axis is spot on and the x-axis is just 0.1mm off. I am happy now smiling smiley

Still looks like you are extruding too much.
What did you set your % flow rate to?
Might try 2-4% lower and try again.

I'm at 98%. I will try 95 or 96 when i get home.

I was wrong the last print was on 100% I didnt save the settings. This one is 96% flow and 20% honeycomb infill

Are those corners suppose to be rounded like that?
Looks like you might have to turn your acceleration and jerk settings up a bit to get cleaner corners.
What speed were you printing those at and at what temp?
Re: Top layer wont print

no the corners shouldnt be rounded. the speed was: Print speed: 40, Outer Perimeter Speed: 40, Infill 53. at 220 degrees without heated bed. And it is PLA not ABS.

Sounds a bit on the hot end for PLA at 220. I print ABS at 230...

This is my latest print. Still PLA. This was at 97 flow 205°C but the corners are not perfectly staright

In all my slicers I need to put the flowrate at 90% for PLA. It extrudes quite, quite different from ABS.
With the browning in the last one it also looks like your temp is also still too high.

Ok i will try 90 tomorow and i see if that helps.

This one came out pretty good but infill was just 10% and no cooling so the top is with holes. Flow 90% 205°C PLA. Should i try even lower flow?

Might try a little less.
Also how many perimiters are you doing on this part? It almost looks like you only do one perimiter. If so try bumping it you you get 2-3 loops to get a cleaner finish.

And how can i force cura to do more perimeters?

Its the wall thickness vale.
Ive got a 0.3mm nozzle.
If i use a thickness of 0.33mm i get one pass of the head on the wall.
If i use 0.66mm i get a double pass of the head so double thickness.
These values wer by experimentation.

I have 0.7 nozzle and the shell thickness is now 0.7. So 1.4 to get 2 perimeters?
Re: Top layer wont print

Correct. Check the part in Cura by viewing the layers. You should have two colored lines around the part showing 2 passes. You might have to go to 1.5mm to get it to show. I know on my .4mm tip I have mine set to .9 to get 2 perimeters.
