Stringy prints

When I print multiple object the travel areas get traces left behind. I have retract set to 2mm at a speed of 1000 and z lift set to 1mm. It looks to me like nothing is retracting.

Try slower speeds, less heat, more retraction or any combination of those.

I have my non printing travel speeds at 60mm already. I reduced temp to 185, and set retraction to 5mm. Still happening. Visually the extruder wheel is not reversing when making non printing moves. I can manually do a reversal in repetier so I know the mechanics are working correctly.

you don't need any more z lift than double your printing layer height. Unless you are using a Bowen type extruder setup, your retraction should be about 1mm when your extrusion multiplier is correct.

At a 5mm retract you are oozing filament, as the print nozzle remains in one place too long due to the time it takes to retract 5mm.

I am concerned that the gears are not turning when retraction is supposed to be happening. No matter what the settings are.

what slicer are you using? What are all your retraction settings?

Slic3r. I started today with 7mm retraction at a speed of 1000mm/s. Now I am at 1mm with a speed of 30mm/s. Z lift of 1 mm.

Extra length on restart .5
Minimum travel after retraction 2
Retract on layer change is checked

Set Extra length on restart to 0. Drop Z lift to double your layer height, under Printer Settings>General>Advanced make sure Use firmware retraction is unchecked.

1000mm/s is an undo-able retraction speed. Try dropping it to 10mm/s.

When it is suppose to do a retraction, does the extruder motor make any odd noises like it's dropping steps?

Looks like it was firmware retraction. Thank you.
