Reducing Stringing Between Objects

Sup guys/gals,

Not sure what you call the stringiness, but I've been trying to reduce it with little success. It seems like retraction isn't the only factor here. Any tips?

Retraction set to 3mm right now. Tried 4, 5 and 6 but then tiny bits on my prints don't print such as the head of a pawn and header bricks on a rook.

Maybe I need to recalibrate the extruder?

Printing at 215C with ABS, 30mm/sec, Slic3r 0.8.4, Marlin, Printrboard on a Printrbot.

Picture is about 15% into a "Majestic Unicorn."

1 - 2 mm retraction is all you need for standard extruders (not bowden), at the fastest your extruder can retract without missing steps. The only other real factors are if your temperature is set too high or your travel moves are too slow.

Looks like you are extruding too much material. Check your extruder steps and your flow rate in your slicing software.

When you start getting into high retraction values, you start getting ooze and print deformation at the retraction point from the nozzle sitting in one location too long while the filament retracts.
