stepper motor vibrating instead of moving
April 11, 2018 04:16PM
Hi everyone!

I am trying to get my Ramps 1.4 to work with Marlin Firmware. When I want to move a motor with Pronterface, it only shakes rather than moves.

- neither Stepper Driver A4988 nor DRV8825 work
- I have tried all configurations of wiring the stepper to the board, nothing works.
- Adjusting the stepper voltage does not work either
- I have tried using different speeds and steps/mm, but only vibrating

Right now I am quite desperate, does anybody have similar problems or even better know a solution?

Thanks for your help in advance!

... either it's way too fast, so the motor ist stalling -- or one of the coils is not connected, so it shakes only around one position ...

The best way to test the general functionality of drivers and steppers is to flash Ramps_test.
If the stepper still vibrates, you can test the coils of the stepper by multimeter ( resistance between black/green and blue/red is the same? )
If you don't have a multimeter, you can connect above mentioned wire pairs and turn the stepper shaft by hand. You should feel a resistance.
If the stepper is OK, then replace the driver.

Okay I figured it out smiling smiley

I had to swap the red and blue cables. Both go to the same coil, you cannot measure it with an Ohmmeter.

Also I got confused because the speed in Pronterface is mm/min and not mm/s.

Thanks!
