Pt 100 w/ amplifier install on Ramps 1.4
February 09, 2017 12:27PM
I have a pt100 that I tried to install on my ramps board. It ended up shorting out components on the board. It also ended up shorting out the amplifier. Has anyone else tried to install one successfully and if so how? I need all the help I can get

... PT100 means, you have resistances around 120 to 200 Ohms and they are normally used with a 1mA constant current regulator circuit - so a complete different wiring compared to the common used thermistors ...

I researched every forum I could find that had info on how to install it and I followed the instructions to the letter. I connected it to a 5v pin and a ground pin and it shorted as soon as I tried to turn it on

... a PT100 at room-temperature should have a resistance of around 120 Ohms - this, with 5Volts to GND, will result in a drawn current of around 42 Milliamperes ... not too big for a regulator, but will overdrive or shorten an I/O-pin ...

What would be your recommendation? Probably not attempt to use it with the ramps board. I hate I wasted the money

I used this diagram from e3d and I still shorted.

what amplifier board are you using, and what pins from the amplifier board are you putting on those ramps pins.

If you have a lot of other crap on your ramps (lcd, servos) remove those for now as you may simply be over loading the 5v rail.

I have the amplifier that came with me the 100 from the 3-D online. I do have an LCD panel

Sorry about the typos. I have Pt100 kit from e3d. It came with thermocouple, amplifier and heat block

ok, so with the link to the product

[e3d-online.com]

and Schematic

[wiki.e3d-online.com]

and Documentation

[wiki.e3d-online.com]

and

we now have some sort of idea what your talking about..

So the above image, shows us the pins are from top to bottom, +5v, signal and gnd
So +5v pin should obviously go to the 5v pin of the mega on aux-1
And the 0v should go to the gnd pin on the mega on aux-1

For now I would just connect up these two pins. (ie just power)

Then stick a multimeter on dc volts and check between gnd and the signal line.
According to this [wiki.e3d-online.com]
room temp 20c ish should output 1.20v
See if its doing that.

Please also provide clear photos of how you plugged it in.

Pin 2 and 3 on the circuit do not match pin 2 and 3 on the ramps aux 2 connector

according to the circuit diagram and ramps aux 2 in the links 0v and signal are reversed
