Best way to hook up a second fan onto Ramps?

I have a fan I sourced from a laptop rated at 5v and 0.5a I want to add to cool my electronics. I was wondering if I could hook it up to D9 with my extruder fan. If it turns off every now and then like my extruder fan does that is fine because it works really well and keeps my board very cool with minimal effort. I know that it would be possible to hook it the 5 or 12v headers on the board but I removed D1 because I only want my Mega connected on a logic level. I guess I could break out my multimeter but does removing D1 eliminate the 5v hookup. Without D1 what are my options? Right now I have it connected to it's PSU which is bascially an old cell phone charger I found, which is kind of inconvienient, and just another wire to deal with.

D9 isn't meant for the extruder fan, but for a part cooling fan. The heatsink of the extruder has to be cooled permanently, as does the controller. In your case always_on 12V fans are the best option . ( or 5V fans if you have a external 5V PSU )
