Applied Motion HT17-075 Stepper Wiring Question
May 28, 2013 05:07PM
I managed to salvage some Applied Motion HT17-075 Stepper Motors at work to use in my RepRap Prusa build I am engaged in. However I am not clear how these wire to my new RAMPS 1.4.

See Applied Motion HT17-075 for more info.

It is an eight wire stepper which can be wired as Bipolar Parallel, Bipolar Series, or Unipolar. Unipolar requires a common that does not appear to be available on the board.

The RAMPS 1.4 Wiring Wiki references "From left to right, wire all of the stepper motor's wires as red, blue, green, and black or red, green, yellow, blue into the pins next to the Pololus" but my motors don't have all these colors.

Thoughts?

Derek

In the Downloads section at your link there is a datasheet "StepMotorWiring-8-lead-striped.pdf" which contains the wiring diagram for Bipolar Series which is the one you want.

I did that and am running RAMPS 1.4 test firmware but it's just vibrating and getting hot. How do I map the A+, A-, B+, B- to 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B on the RAMPS?

Thanks

Yeah, the different notation is confusing smiling smiley

1A => A+
1B => A-
2A => B+
2B => B-

If the motor turns the wrong way, just swap 1A and 1B.

If the motor vibrates, it suggest one of the coils is not connected properly, or current limit is too low.

Thanks everyone. My motors are working with test firmware and RAMPS 1.4

Hi everyone, waking this topic back up.

I can get these Applied Motion Steppers motors working but my x-axis vibrates a lot when it moves. I tried adjusting the Pot on the POLOLU's but it doesn't really get rid of it.

I switched my x and y axis to see if its the driver, and the x-axis still vibrates.

I am questioning whether these 8-wire steppers should have been wired as bipolar-series with both coils or should I have just used one coil. If one coil how do I wire that?

Is there a way to limit the current in the Marlin RC3 firmware?

What is your micro-stepping set at?
