I represent a group in the San Francisco Bay Area interested in helping out with this project. We're at a very early stage, still looking for a space to work in, but soon we'll have a dedicated hacker space for 3d printing // research.

their are some recordings of updates on [hackerspaces.org]
from earlier this year.
Do when you up and running do tell us what area you would like to contribute in. If your not sure where to start getting a roughng pump (vane pump 2 stage goes to 10-3 torr) and TIG welder, old xray power supply and a pirani vacuum guage can make a fun chamber!

It will be interesting to see what comes of this. I am already actively 3D printing on my prusa and am starting to look around locally for like minded people.
