Where to buy Kapton Tape/Blue Painter Tape?
June 26, 2013 09:52AM
Just got my printrbot yesterday and the PLA has trouble sticking to the bed. (I tried a random brown shiny tape found at home) To no luck, the filament just curls up to the nozzle and sticks there, not sticking to the bed.

Do conventional hardware shops sell these tapes or do you have to hunt for them in Singapore?

Or maybe it's just my settings? I'm super new to 3D printing, so I played around with it a little. (My settings are in the attached files)

Currently using Pronterface with Slic3r.

Hi,

I used kapton tape before. Now I use a 2mm thick glass on my heated bed. I find glass alone is a better solution. No problem with sticking to the bed. Easy to remove and clean too. I got it for S$ 4.

(PLA, bed temp 50C)

With regards
Shan

Where did you get your kapton tape?

Also, my printer has no heated bed. (Printrbot Jr)

Does using the glass still help if there's no heated bed?

for kapton tape try romscraj..blue painter tape i believe is from 3M,but i use normal maskingtape and pla sticks well and the good part is it gives a leatherish pattern..but dont turn on the heaterbed when using masking tape as the masking tape's stickiness will degrade and somehow shrink/move..btw,temp extruder 210 deg is too high, thats the temperature for abs

That's good news, because masking tape is cheap hahaha! And as you mentioned, do not turn on the heated bed. Good for me because I don't even have a heated bed.

I've been trying some methods seen online, whereby I set the temperature high for the 1st few layers to get it to stick really well and then turn it down to 190 for the rest of the print. But It's not really working so far.

Awesome... 1st thing tomorrow: masking tape (and maybe some hairspray).
Thank you for the tips! I'll be sure to update this post with my results! grinning smiley

yes masking tape is cheap and good! I use it all the time for my pla prints..Since u are able to print, time to pin point the exact temperature for ur filament..my pla is around 175deg and abs is 210deg,u could try around that range,do note that all filaments and colour DO NOT have the same temperature, u need to find the sweet spot.

Masking tape is indeed amazing!

190 hit the spot for my prints. Got pretty good quality on this simple print, as can be seen in the attachment. The plastic warped at the base though, gotta try to resolve that problem.

Do take note of machine, nozzle difference, I recently switch from ABS to PLA thinking that PLA always at 170+ only. Ended with much pain (sort of like extruder skip step or filament jam) and found that it works well at higher temp.(using 185 now) Hope you guys don't fall in this,. But be careful as the temperature set higher, the cold end side (filament entering heating zone) may soften and jam. For me I have a small fan there to keep the temp down.

Hope this help for those having a problem there.

Cheers,
SW

for abs,i use abs juice to prevent the warp, but for pla heaterbed is the best way to go as pla start to soften at arnd 60deg so the warp will be greatly reduced..u could stick a peltier under the heatedbed if heatedbed is not to ur liking

I am thinking of a future heated bed upgrade for my PB Jr though...
