Old cured Resin

Old cured Resin

I need to clean a old and all cured resin from a metallic support from a SLA.
The support looks like this one: [entradafranca.files.wordpress.com]

But the problem is that the machine hasn't been used for a while and the resin in the piece is all cured.
I thought to sandpaper the piece, but it could remove some metallic material with the resin.
Other ideia was to put in an oven until it reaches the degradation point of the resin, but we don't know if it would be useful.

Does anyone have/had the same problem?
Any ideia?

Thanks,

André

As this is epoxy resin, dissolving this somehow isn't an option. Brushing with a steel brush might be an option. If you can, put the parts into hot/cooking water for an hour or two, this will make epoxy a lot weaker.

Also, hammering sometimes works, as UV-curable resin isn't exactly the best glue. Avoid hammering on parts which are connected to one of the precision sliders, of course.

Other than that, remains of hardened epoxy won't affect the machine's workings, if you manage to free all movements.

... you can try with a sequence of heating/cooling (e.g. boiling water and liquid nitrogene) - the different thermal expansion of the resing vs. metal will peel the resin off ...

Hi

Your question is more than 6 months old and probably you have found a solution to it. But if not, you can try this:- Take 100gms Carbitol Acetate, add 2 ml liquid detergent to it. To this add 20 gms of 5% Caustic solution (19gms water + 1gm Caustic). You have to be careful about handling caustic solution.

Apply the above mixture on the cured resin and wait for 20-30 minutes. Within this time the cured resin should soften or dissolve. Wipe of the loose or dissolved resin from the vat.
