As a replacement for the standard zinc plated M5 threaded rod used in the ReprapPro Mendel and similar kits I've upgraded mine with A4 marine grade stainless steel all thread and brass nuts.
I found the zinc plated all thread wore alarmingly quickly and have now swapped to stainless and brass nuts.
