Hephaestus: a Team Competing and Collaborating for the Gada Prize

I am proposing a redesign of the RepRap from the ground (build surface?) up. I realize that this is a much larger endeavor than it might need to be to win the prize, but my thinking is this: if the spirit of the prize is to have people make a living off this device, we should design a machine that can fulfill the Prize specs without being hindered by any limitations of current RepRaps.

Hi cmchap,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Reprap.

Jolly good luck with the adventure. And I would recommend building a Repstrap first, you will learn much and gain respect for doing it.

You may want to rethink the "Stormtrooper Helmet" statement, was rooting for you until then.

Yup, I'd suggest building a http://reprap.org/wiki/WolfStrap-English or an http://reprap.org/wiki/Eiffel,
and using these with it: http://reprap.org/wiki/Pololu_Electronics. Based on my sense of RepRap's culture, I think it unlikely that you'll have success with a kickstarter, but if you get in contact with your local RepRap User Groups: [forums.reprap.org] [forums.reprap.org] they'll happily do up a loaner extruder for you to use with your RepStrap..

Cheers,

Remember, you're all RepRap developers (once you've joined the super-secret developer mailing list), and the wiki, RepRap.org, [reprap.org] is for everyone and everything! grinning smiley

No worries, unless he's a fan of episodes 1-3. winking smiley

Actually, most of his general plans sound similar to my ideas! I plan on a stationary work bed, 3 axis gantry style extrduer mover, a grabber to hold one of several extruders in the sweet spot, and a heated bead. However, I still shy away from conveyor belt work beds until we get something that will work in the Z axis, like segmented plates on tank tracks.

As to the Stormtrooper helmet, I was planing on a 12"x12'x12 work zone, so it may accidentally end being big enough to make one. And if cmchap posts a good design of one on thing verse, I might just make one myself! smiling smiley
