? - MDF build platform

Hello,

Just wondering how MDF is going to be for a carrage?
I'm working on a prototype, and MDF was easiest to try first...
But the wieght of this thing is starting to add up.
My best guess, is that it's about 2lbs. What's a good weight?

Another question is, how does MDF hold up to the heat?
It's a silicone heatbed, so it needs a rigid base for support.

The glass I have is 3mm thick, untempered, will it be ok for the bed?

Any feedback on what I have would be muchly appreciated!

Oh, the MDF I used started out at 1/2"

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Mogal, it is a good material for a prototype. But i think that the humidity and heat will generate problems in the future.
I t is better than ABS plastic parts, but i think that the aluminium will be the best. With little height and weight.
The wood fiber does not disperse the heat.

i use it in about the same way as you do, works fine for about 6 months now.

just give it a small layer of paint to control the humiditie but it wont be that big a deal. Maybe only a little height difference of the table after a period of time

Think that the paint may be flamable. With heat, it iwill be a problem.

Yea, I was thinking that as well, but a high heat paint I think would be ok?
I will be painting everything when done, to help keep the MDF stable....
I like the bed design I've done, but have to redo the framework sad smiley

So for you silicone heatbed users, what are you doing to support it?

you can use high temp grill spray paint. It is good to like 1200 degrees F.
