how do i stop the motor shaft which has a load, from rotating when the power is shut off

Posted by za
I have a stepper motor that is required to lift a weight but when the power shuts off the thing falls. I need it to be in the same position. What should i do?

some sort of a brake on a solenoid

When power is on brakes are retracted, when power is off brake is applied
Because this is a common problem, there are solutions ready to buy! This page describes the exact scenario [www.orientalmotor.com] "Electromechanical brake type used for vertical operation" There are stepper motors with builtin electromechanical brake, and you can also get braking units.

Whether off the shelf or DIY, the principle is the same as Dust describes.

Balance the load, with a counterbalance or spring.

Use a screw to lift the load...
