The A4982/A4988 family and the drv8825 can be driven from a DAC or digipot to avoid the need for manual adjustment. Both the Duet and the Smoothieboard electronics use A4982 drivers driven in this way.

Not that I am aware of. Get yourself a modern board, such as Duet or Smoothie, and you will gain more than just software control of motor current.

Yes, both have firmware that supports CoreXY. I support the CoreXY mode in Duet firmware, see [github.com].
