Drivers for 17HS4417 (1.5R, 1.7A)

Hi all!

I've recently purchased a few 17HS4417 motors, rated 1.7A, with coil resistance 1.5R.

Clearly the coil resistance is fairly low - I'm wondering if drivers like DRV8825 would cope with that? Any experience with such a low-resistance motors using DRV8825?

I'm fairly new to the topic, any suggestion/help highly appreciated.

It's no problem to drive a stepper motor with less than the specified current. You get less, but usually sufficient tourque, of course. Any driver will work, higher current drivers will allow for more tourque. Also, steppers are usually calibrated to use not more than sufficient tourque to keep both, motors and steppers, cooler.

Thanks for your answer.

I understand the current / torque relation, as well as PWM basics. What concerned me here (after second reading of the datasheet) is that both PWM frequency and blanking time (minimum ON time) are fixed in case of DRV8825 (30kHz and 3.75us, respectively).

I was wondering about the lower limit of the stepper coil inductance/resistance, but just made some simple math (R-L circuit current versus time) and (unless I screwed something up) it should be fine smiling smiley Anyway, 2 DRV8825 boards are on the way already - time to switch fro theory to practice smiling smiley

I have bought 17HS4417 motors too and i want to ask if they works good

Hi!

Those motors work perfectly fine in my Prusa i3 - you can see it here: [picasaweb.google.com]

However, I wasn't exactly happy with DRV8825 (annoying noise, as well as microstepping problems). I switched to A4988 StepSticks for immediately better results.

I've already ordered A4988 StepSticks so that's great to know i'll work good and thx for photos. smileys with beer Do you think they have enough torque to be used in direct drive extruder like this [www.thingiverse.com] ?
