Resonator 16.00MHZ vs Crystals 16MHz
March 06, 2012 10:12PM
Hey everyone,
I am assembling my sanguinololu board v1.3. for what ever reason I must have not ordered the 16mhz resonator. I do how ever have 16mhz crystals. Is it possible for me to use my crystal?

[ca.mouser.com]

It fits in fine under the DIP socket. Going to be using the 1284P

Thanks!

Yes it is ok to use crystals but you need to place bypass caps appropriate for the crystal to ground. Something between 18pf to 22 pf for most applications. The resonators has them already built in the case. Just so you know picking the wrong value of caps can mess up your uController timing.

Alright I have some .22pf 50v ceramic caps in my parts bin. What would be the best way to add them into the circuit?

I just flipped the crystal on to the back and put two 0402 .22pf caps on there...hopefully it works!

its 22pf not .22pf as you wrote. You mean 22pf right?

Connect each cap to each leg going to ground.

I bought a resonator with 16MHz and 15pF (bought wrong) can I use those resonator to my sanguinololu1.3a with Atmega1284p with some modification in firmware or Arduino compilation ?

Your resonator should work fine. Look at the atmega1284P datasheet page 32/33 for more info.

You don't need to make any modification to your Sanguino nor the firmware.
