New Printer - Ramps 1.4 w/ GADGETS3D display displaying mostly garbage

I have a Ramps 1.4 board w/1 extruder and a Gadgets 3d lcd display,
I am using marlin firmware and uncommented out the gadgets3d line and changed the mainboard to the ramps 1.4

any ideas? I have tried swapping the cables.
