Continuing trouble with CubeX Duo

We have had the damn thing for two years now. Not a single successful print. They won't give me my money back. So, I am stuck with this "thing" and now really need it for my work. So I am asking for help with the following questions:
1. is it possible to run/drive the machine via an external source, like Slic3r?
2. if it is possible, how does one go about this?
3. if it is not possible, would calibrating the print head temp, the feed speed, and many other parameters help? Or am I grasping at straws?
4. is it possible to actually calibrate the parameters noted on Slic3r and other programs of its ilk?
I want to mention that we have now installed the print bed heater; but I gotta think this is no panacea.

slic3r only chops up the model and gives the Gcode, its pronterface or cura that can control the printer
