noob question on x-ends
December 31, 2014 12:45AM
Hi, first build here. I'm substituting common sizes in the U.S. for some of the hardware to make it easier to find pieces. So far, things have been going well. 3/8" threaded bars work great for the main structure. And, #6 machine screws work well in place of 4mm screws.

My question is how important is it to fit the nut into the recess on the x motor and idler ends for the threaded rod? I'm trying to use 1/4" threaded rod in place of 5mm. The only U.S. size nut that seems to fit in that space is a #6 which would be a VERY small rod that I would think would result in serious wobbling.

Can it be opened up with a dremel and glued or something? Has someone made an STL for a set of these for 1/4" nuts by chance? I searched but could not find anything useful.

Cheers!
Joe

You can modify the spots where the M5 nuts are located, but you'll need to be able to secure your 1/4" nuts there. I would suggest using 1/4" T-nuts, as they will be easy to secure against rotational movement...
