Print issues--thoughts?
April 23, 2014 10:04PM
Hi all! I just got some PLA and decided to try it out. I have a Makerfarm Prusa i3 6" and used a .50m JHead nozzle, I used the config settings recommended by Colin but changed the bed temp to 90/70 second layer instead of 110/70. The hot end extruded at 205. .40/.35 for layer heights with 0 infill. In all honesty it looks better than anything I've been able to print in ABS, but it clearly has issues. I'm not really sure what is causing it. Any ideas?

thanks!
Natasha

205 C seems a bit high for PLA. Maybe it's too runny and not staying where the extruder puts it.

That's what I thought, but I figured Colin had it set that high for a reason. I'll play with the temps and see if I get better results.

Thanks!

I did a second print with lower temps, extruder 190/190, bed 80/60

Yea those temps are a bit too high, they are temps used for ABS nearly

I don't think that your problem is too high a temperature. My experience is that higher temperatures give better layer adhesion.
This is a fairly roughPLA print at 220C

Mendel90 E3D hotend 0.6 nozzle .45 layer height 60C bed
My thought is that something is a bit looser than optimum.
After running a new printer for a few hours it is good to check every bolt and belt for tightness. Watch your belts while printing to check that they are not at the edges of the idlers.
How fast are you running the printer? Maybe compare prints at different speeds.
