Y stepper or Extruder making music?

Y stepper or Extruder making music?
April 30, 2016 04:37AM
Hi folks,
in the past few months the Y stepper or the extruder on my beasty has started
regularly producing a 4 tone ascending sequence.

It doesn't seem to be causing any fires etc, so I'm not panicking. But why is this
happening? Is it actually bad? I haven't bothered to find out which motor is doing
it as nothing bad seems to be happening.

If I can find out why this is happening I wouldn't mind tweaking the rest of the
steppers to do it. :-)

Many thanks

Turning acceleration down to a low value will tend to make the motors sing. You'll hear the "music" as you print curved structures.

Hi digital_dentist,

the info gives me something to start with.
Quite like the idea of a musical printer

look up mid2cnc. the author is clearly *not* a python programmer, i'm currently adapting it to work with a corexy printer and cleaning it up. but the principle is there: take any midi file, and, based on the number of stepper motors you have, move them at specific speeds corresponding to "notes". a few strategic decisions are made, to pick higher notes as apparently those sound better, so your mileage may vary depending on the midi file selected.... but i just love the whole idea.

oh - one of the example files is "man on the silver mountain" by rainbow. awesome song. best played on LP. don't bother with the remastered CDs, and REALLY don't bother with MP3s - the subtlety of the unsubtlety of progressive rock is systematically and completely destroyed by MP3 compression algorithms. ironically you *might* actually get some of the beautiful "grunginess" back when using NEMA17 stepper motors... smiling smiley

You may have a look here (macro making music): [reprap.org]

I implemented it as a config file loading acknowledgement.

Also tested on X,Y,Z and extruder

I must admit I never considered using steppers as part of an audiophiles sound
system. :-)
